Paddle Effect

Paddle Effect is a multiplayer classic 2D tennis game developed in Unity. It is the third and final iteration of my chaotic multiplayer concept that first began in GameMaker Studio.

Project Purpose and Goal

This is a personal project that I had a lot of fun developing and playing over the years, and twice I rebuilt it from scratch to be bigger and grander than before. With this current iteration, my goal is to publish it on Steam with an entire story campaign, achievements, unlockables, and online multiplayer.

Tech Stack Explanation

The switch from GameMaker Studio to Unity was made because Unity is a more capable game engine and uses the C# language that I've grown to love. Additionally, Paddle Effect uses vector graphics because they can be scaled and rotated without any artifacts.

Problems and Thought Process

It's always a challenge to switch away from something you're comfortable with. I had to learn how to use Unity and get a feeling for its quirks when remaking the precursor to what would become Paddle Effect. Things like physics behaved a little different, and I had to figure out how to structure my input handling code in what makes sense for Unity. Luckily for me, Unity's new Input System was just becoming available and proved to be much better than the legacy Input Manager.

Lessons Learned

Being my first major Unity project, I learned a lot on how to integrate SVG assets, apply post-processing effects, and use the new Input System to enable local multiplayer. I still have ways to go with integrating the Steam SDK and taking the multiplayer online.
